Poker is a game
of math and
calculation more
than any other
skill and more
than any other
game. A process
through which
one determines
one’s course of
action through a
game is referred
to as pot odds.
Pot odds are the
ratio of the
value of the
pot, if it were
to be won,
against the
amount of money
needed to remain
in the game; in
this way a game
that had a pot
of $100 with a
$10 call would
have 100:10, or
10:1 pot odds.
For the most
part, the pot
odds define the
likelihood of
winning the
game.
The percentage
of the pot odds
and thereby the
chance of
winning can be
simply figured
out by adding
the total of the
reduced ratio
together and
then dividing
the cost of the
call by this
total. So in the
above example we
would divide 1
by 11 which
would result in
0.09 or a 9%
chance of
winning it.
The reason that
this is so
important is
because it will
help a good
player determine
whether it is
worthwhile for
him to stay in a
game, raise a
bet, or fold
out. If a good
hand minus one
card is held, an
experienced
player will be
able to weight
the chances of
that card
appearing
against the pot
odds in order to
decide his next
move.
Reading pot odds
can become like
second nature,
and once
mastered can be
used to
manipulate the
game to one’s
own advantage.
